Workshop with Jessica Delgado¬†(Princeton University), on her book-in-progress, Troubling Devotion: Laywomen and the Church in Colonial Mexico. Sponsored by the Stanford Initiative for Religious and Ethnic Understanding and Coexistence, supported by the President’s Fund, the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, the Department of Religious Studies, and the Taube Center for Jewish Studies. Co-sponsored by the Department of History.

This project explores how women who did not take vows affected and negotiated the relationship with priests, sacramental duties, and ecclesiastical courts that were each an integral part of a colonial world where religion imbued all interactions and no clear distinction between the secular and sacred existed.

RSVP to Prof. Kathryn Gin Lum for a copy of the advance reading.
