Religious Studies PhD Minor

The PhD Minor in Religious Studies provides current Stanford PhD students the opportunity to gain knowledge of theories, methods, fields, and traditions within the scope of the discipline.

Requirements:

  • One of the two Theories and Methods courses (304 A or B)
  • 20 units total at the 300 level or above (including 304 A . Courses must be taken for a grade and student must receive at least a B).
  • Recommended that interested students contact an informal minor advisor or the DGS to consult on classes suited to interests and abilities

Application Process: 

Students are asked to email Graduate Student Services Officer, Jill Covington (jillj [at] stanford.edu (jillj[at]stanford[dot]edu)), with the following information:

  1. Name
  2. Degree Program
  3. Statement of Interest (ca 250 words)
  4. Courses taken, courses considering
  5. Approval from primary advisor (submit email for verification by DGS)
  6. Transcript sent to GSSO (can be unofficial)
  7. writing sample
  8. 2 letters of recommendation

Once the student has been approved by the department (rolling, approved at next faculty meeting), they submit a form online via axess petitioning to add the PhD minor. This form is routed to the home PhD department and the new PhD minor department for approval.
